2005 Whistler Workshop on Planetary Science

2005 Whistler Workshop on Planetary Science
STUDENT REGISTRATION INFORMATION

SORRY. Registration of the 2005 Workshop closed March 31, 2005.

Application procedure

Students may download an application form (PDF format) which should be filled in and mailed, along with a personal cheque for the registration fees (sorry, no other form of payment will be accepted) to the address on the form. Please email us when you surface mail your application so we can confirm reception to you.

Applications will be initially reviewed March 1st 2005. March 10th 2005 is the last date of receipt for those who wish to be considered for financial support. Should the number of applications exceed the available number of places (55) then the participants will be selected based on a balance of disciplinary lines, current educational level, geographical distribution of their current institution, and the applicant's statement of why they are interested in the 2005 Whistler Workshop.

Students are advised to not purchase airfares or reserve hotel accomodation until receiving confirmation of their enrollment in early March. West Jet has provided a travel discount (10% off their regular fares); details will be sent to successful applicants.

Financial responsibilities

Student participants should expect be covering the following expenses :

Registration fee : $200
Transport to Vancouver : Variable. Discount airfares on West Jet
One night hotel in Vancouver : about $60   (assuming double occupancy)
Six nights in Whister Coast : $300   (assuming double occupancy)
Dinners in Whistler : Variable. Expect $15-35/night for six nights

Financial aid

There will be some limited financial aid to cover the participation of students that do not have research supervisors. We intend to provide roughly $1000 $Cdn grants to a handful of successful applicants to allow them to cover their airfare, lodging, and some meals. We are not sure (as of mid-February 2005) how many student subsidies we can provide, but we expect it to be about half a dozen. This financial aid is targeted at undergraduate students who do not have thesis supervisors (with NSERC grants). Please do not check the `request financial aid' box on the application form if you are a graduate student with a thesis supervisor unless you cannot attend without this help. The aid is limited to students attending canadian institutions.

Students requesting financial aid will be sent information on how to apply and their applications will be flagged. ONLY those students who are then successful in obtaining one of the small number of subsidies will be admitted to the Whister Workshop. [That is, if you apply for aid and are unsuccessful it is unlikely that there will be any spaces left in the workshop; thus only students who cannot attend without aid should apply].

Note that if you apply for financial aid, your registration form must still be accompanied by your registration cheque; if you are not selected for financial aid your cheque will be returned un-cashed.

Student committment

Because of the concentrated nature of the workshop, students will be expected to complete a suite of recommended readings before the workshop (these will be communicated in late April). During the workshop period students will be expected to actively participate in school activities with students from other disciplinary backgrounds, and complete evening reading assignments. We are looking for students excited to learn about planetary science.

There will be a few time blocks during the June 6-11 week for time off in order to take advantage of the natural beauty of Whistler, hopefully with new friends made during the course of the week!
